Online payment networks like EBay's (EBAY) PayPal, Apple (AAPL) iTunes and Amazon (AMZN) Payments are expected to be future leaders in the mobile-payment field, according to a global survey issued Thursday by SAP (SAP).

The enterprise software maker's GSMA Mobile World Congress Survey polled mobile operators, telecom providers, global mobile executives and others. It found that 28% of respondents expected eBay, Apple and Amazon to be among the anticipated leaders of future successful mobile payments offerings. This was right behind banks, which placed first with 29%. Credit cards providers were third with 26%, and consortiums of mobile operators placed fourth with 26%.

The 2013 statistics diverged from last year's 2012 SAP Mobile World Congress Survey, which anticipated banks (24%) and mobile operators (26%) would be key catalysts, but placed lower expectations on credit cards (10%) and online payment networks (19%).

The survey also found that 34% of respondents felt that apps like Apple Passbook will speed up brands offering wallet services. But with regard to competition in mobile wallets, only 28% expected new ticketing and coupon services, such as Apple Passbook, Google (GOOG) Now and the Samsung wallet app, to become alternatives to true mobile wallets. And 38% also said that lack of consumer awareness and too much confusion around the offerings were holding back mobile wallet services.

In other survey findings, 53% of industry leaders said that improving customers' retail experience is essential to creating a successful mobile payments service. Respondents said the "secret sauce" for creating a better retail experience includes location-based point-of-sale offerings, point-of-sale services such as near field communication, and enabling universal acceptance of mobile payments. Less popular services included targeted offers based on consumer preferences and shopping history and integration with mass transit.
